Summer Application Processing

Summer applications are processed in date order.  If you make changes to your summer application after it has been submitted, you will need to complete a new summer aid for request form.  It will be processed in date order it was received.

General Eligibility Requirements

  • Submitting a summer application does not guarantee summer financial aid
  • Student must be fully admitted to a degree seeking program at PSC in order to receive financial aid funds.
  • Student must make Satisfactory Academic Progress in order to receive financial aid funds
  • Student cannot be in default on a student loan or owe a repayment to a federal grant.
  • Transient students are not eligible for summer aid.

PSC must have received valid results from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before summer eligibility can be determined.  To apply for summer aid,  you should complete the 2013-2014 FAFSA. This application uses information from your 2012 federal tax return.  You may apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

The PSC online summer application is also required in order to apply for summer financial aid.  In order to complete the online summer application you must be registered in classes for the summer term before you are eligible to submit the summer application.

You must be enrolled at least half-time in order to be eligible for a federal student loan.

If you change your summer enrollment AFTER submitting your application, you must notify the Office of Financial Aid immediately.  Any change could affect aid eligibility.  To do this you must go back online and complete a new summer application. Please check the “REVISION” box on the application to notify the Financial Aid Office that you have changed your enrollment status.

Eligibility for Pell Grants

Students may qualify for Pell Grant funds if they were enrolled less than full-time in either fall or spring term and did not use all of their eligibility during the current academic term.

Eligibility for Federal Student Loans

Loan funds received during the preceding fall and spring terms will determine eligibility for summer loan funds.  Federal eligibility is determined on an academic year basis.  If you receive the maximum loan amount(s) during the fall and/or spring semesters, you will not be eligible for summer loans.  Federal loan recipients cannot be in default on a student loan or have borrowed in excess of student loan limits.  Students who have reached the aggregate loan limit for their level are ineligible for additional federal loan funds.

If you received additional unsubsidized Stafford loan due to a Parent PLUS loan denial in either the fall or the spring semester for 2013-2014, your parent must complete a new Parent PLUS loan application to determine further unsubsidized Stafford eligibility for summer 2014.  The Parent PLUS loan application can be completed at www.studentloans.gov. Choose the 2013-2014 award year for summer Parent PLUS loan applications.

Summer Disbursement of Funds

Federal Pell Grant funds will not be paid until you begin attending classes in the minimum number of hours that are required.  Example:  Full time Pell Grant requires 12 hours of enrollment.  If you enroll in 6 hours Summer I and 6 hours Summer II, you will receive half Pell Grant Summer I and half Pell Grant Summer II.  If you drop classes or change your enrollment, your Pell Grant award will be revised accordingly.

You cannot receive loan funds until you begin attending classes in the minimum number of hours that are required for half-time enrollment (6 hours). Example: If you enroll 3 hours Summer I and 3 hours Summer II, loan funds will not be paid to you until you began the 6 th hour in Summer II.

All summer loans must be disbursed in two disbursements.  Loan periods that are a single summer session will be disbursed in two disbursements; the first disbursement after verification of enrollment, and the second disbursement midpoint the summer term.  Loan periods that are for two summer sessions will be disbursed, after enrollment verification in Summer I , and after enrollment verification in  Summer II.

All charges must be paid in full before any funds are released to the student.  The amount of financial aid credited to your account must be greater than the charges due in order for a refund check to be created.  If the amount of aid credited to your student account does not exceed your charges until Summer II (June) you will not receive a refund check or direct deposit until Summer II (June).

Withdrawing from Philander Smith College during Summer

If you totally withdraw or stop attending all classes before completing more than 60% of the term, a portion of the total federal aid you received, excluding Federal Work Study earnings, may need to be repaid immediately. You will be notified if you owe a repayment due to an official/unofficial withdrawal within 30 days of the date the determination of the withdrawal is made. You will be billed for the amount that you owe to the Title IV programs as well as any amount due to the College, as a result of Title IV funds that were returned that would have been used to cover charges.
