Public/Media Relations

Public Relations

Institutional Advancement is responsible for community relations and for promoting and marketing Philander Smith College, as well as its many programs and services, to a wide variety of college constituencies. Our primary objectives are to:

  • Maintain an image of quality in all publications
  • Special events
  • The web site and other communications
  • Provide timely, accurate and readable information to the public about the programs and services of the college
  • Relate to the media and public officials on behalf of the college, providing information that supports the mission of the institution

The Office of Public Relations is the major protector and promoter of the Philander Smith image, concerning itself with the obvious, such as college publications, the Web site, events and media relations, as well as providing major input regarding the College's signage, colors, logo, banners, use of facilities by outside groups, landscaping and other matters that affect the public's perception of the institution.

Media Relations

The Office of Public Relations is responsible for enhancing and advancing the reputation of Philander Smith College. The office is responsible for:

  • General inquiries about the college and its affairs;
  • Coordinating and responding to inquiries from members of the media;
  • Advising, when requested, on the preparation of printed materials;
  • Assisting with special events;
  • Coordinating the production of internal and external bulletins and magazines; 
  • Questions regarding the official logo and its usage (graphic standards);
  • Coordinating and designing all College advertisement and marketing matierals;
  • Coordinating community relations activities.
Media Access to Campus & Credentials
If you are planning to cover a story that requires contact with any member of the Philander Smith faculty, staff, or student body you must contact the Office of Public Relations at (501) 370-5310 for proper clearance.  

Reporters or media outlets wishing to conduct photo or video shoots on campus must also obtain proper clearance from the Office of Public Relations. No media outlet will be permitted to bring any camera or recording devices on campus without prior notification. No on-campus live shots will be permitted of broadcast crews who have not received prior consent.

Visual Identity Program & Guidelines

Philander Smith College’s updated brand identity reflects proudly upon the College’s heritage with a contemporary and sophisticated flair. In addition to deepening the College’s green and gold color palette, the brand signature is now distinguished by the full use of Philander Smith College in name in combination with the tagline, “Think Justice.” The most prominent facet of the icon is the incorporation of the gold flame, a nod to the College’s affiliation with the United Methodist Church and its status as a founding member of the United Negro College Fund. Most importantly, the facelift is a distinctive image that supports the emerging mission of Philander Smith College to graduate students grounded as advocates for social justice.

We encourage all offices to recycle any old stationery, publications and other print materials that contain outdated messages and feature the old College logo. Our office will work with you to reprint your materials using these guidelines and policies. Thank you for working with us to safeguard the College’s reputation and public image.
