Block Party Kicks off Homecoming 2010

Philander Smith College’s Pre-Alumni Council is hosting an United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Block Party, Sunday, Nov. 7, from 1 to 6 p.m. The block party is the first event on the 2010 Homecoming schedule.

There will be refreshments, games, and a Greek stroll-off, in which fraternity and sorority members compete in a synchronized strut in a line formation. A live band will perform.  The party will be held in the parking area in front of the Cox Building.

This event is free, but donations are encouraged to support the UNCF. Students will also solicit signatures to support a letter-writing campaign they’ve initiated to strengthen Arkansas’s drunk driving laws.

The UNCF is an organization dedicated to the educational advancement of African-Americans. It helps approximately 60,000 students each year by awarding more than 400 scholarship and internship programs. It also hosts events such as ‘An Evening of Stars’ to raise money for UNCF schools. Philander Smith College is one of 39 UNCF schools across the nation and the only in Arkansas.

Philander Smith College is located at 900 W. Daisy Bates. The event is open to the public. For more information about this event, contact Sade Daniels, Vice President of Student Government, at (510) 395-2131. See the entire weeklong Homecoming 2010 schedule at www.philander.edu, under News and Events.

Key Cities events help to increase the amount of alumni donations and participation in campus events. Alumni support has increased from 4 to 13 percent since the receptions started two years ago, said Yvonne Alexander, Director of Alumni Affairs.

The Central Arkansas Key Cities reception is free and open to alumni and their guests from 6 to 8 p.m. It’s being sponsored by the United Negro College Fund’s Capacity Building Grant.
