The Center for Student Services addresses the needs of traditional and non-traditional
students through a variety of academic and student services, including academic advising;
freshman advising; new student orientation; tutoring; writing lab; career counseling
and placement; and cultural and social activities.
The mission of the Center at Philander Smith College is to assist students with their academic, career and social development needs.*
The Academic Advisor provides students with the necessary guidance and academic counseling within their area of study. This includes, but is not limited to, time management, note taking, test taking, and other study strategies.
The Career Counselor assists students in developing knowledge related to careers and career choices. The counselor will provide guidance in resume writing, job searches and other successful career strategies.
The Licensed Counselor/Therapist provides personal and social counseling; crisis intervention; outreach; and short-term psychological counseling (e.g. stress management, relationship issues, depression, etc.).
* A student may voluntarily request help or be referred by college faculty/staff to the Center for Student Services.
